16. Title: The Find of Materialism: How Evidence of the Paranormal Is Bringing Science and Spirit Together
Author: Dr Charles Tart PhD
Book’s Topic: ESP
Summary: This one is about parapsychology, Dr Charles Tart PhD. Charley's approach to parapsychology, the clever experiments he conducted, and the way he framed the broader context of this topic (which evolved into the field of transpersonal psychology). The theme of his latest book is that scientific (or I should say, scientistic) models based solely on materialistic assumptions are wrong, and here are the reasons why. In building his case, he provides quick overviews of most of the lab-based and observational evidence (ESP to NDEs, and everything in between). He also analyzes the cognitive pathology of hyper-skepticism in some detail to show why materialism rules and why psi research remains on the scientific fringe despite the mounting evidence.

18. Title: The ESP Enigma
Author: Powell
Book’s Topic: ESP
Summary: Psychic power has had trouble gaining scientific respectability, but Powell makes a game effort to propose serious consideration of its existence. Powell, who has a medical degree, soberly approaches the controversial subject, summarizing research in four areas of extrasensory perception: telepathy, psychokinesis, clairvoyance, and precognition. Powell provides many startling stories about premonitions and dreams that seemed to come true and acknowledges the dominance of anecdotal evidence in ESP research. Researchers have accordingly attempted to put things on the less subjective footing of controlled experiments. Powell discusses these frankly, noting statistical support for psychic abilities yielded by some trials or ambiguities in results, as the case may be, as in those obtained by CIA researchers on “remote viewing.” Not about to compromise her credibility by claiming that mind power can levitate tables, Powell adheres to the possibility that human consciousness might affect matter at the quantum mechanical level. Incorporating Powell’s knowledge of neuroscience, this work should appeal to those open to the idea that ESP exists.

20. Remote Viewers: The Secret History of America's Psychic Spies
Author: Jim Schnabe
Book’s Topic: Remote Viewing
Summary: Remote Viewers is a tale of the Pentagon's attempts to develop the perfect tool for espionage: psychic spies. These psychic spies, or "remote viewers," were able to infiltrate any target, elude any form of security, and never risk scratch. For twenty years, the government selected civilian and military personnel for psychic ability, trained them, and put them to work, full-time, at taxpayers' expense, against real intelligence targets. The results were so astonishing that the program soon involved more than a dozen separate agencies, including the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Council, the FBI, the National Security Agency, the Secret Service, the Navy, the Army, the Air Force, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the US Customs Service, the US Special Forces Command, and at least one Pentagon drug-interaction task force. Most of this material is still officially classified.

27: Reading the Enemy's Mind: Inside Star Gate—America's Psychic Espionage Program
Author: Paul H. Smith
Book’s Topic: Remote Viewing
Summary: In Reading the Enemy's Mind, Smith reveals that the military and intelligence communities performed hundreds of experiments and operational intelligence assignments using "remote viewing," the government's term for ESP. The program's first big success came in 1979 when a viewer found a downed Soviet bomber in Africa after other intelligence operatives had failed--a coup praised by President Jimmy Carter. The psychics received target assignments from virtually every U.S. national-security agency, and Smith says they produced numerous positive results. Smith's biggest revelation, however, is that the government research found that almost all people--not merely a gifted few--seem to have the potential of developing ESP skills, with enough practice and a few tips from a pro like Smith. Many readers will no doubt find it hard to know what to make of Reading the Enemy's Mind and whether to believe any of it, but Smith writes with both color and a measured tone that together produce a captivating yarn even for the non-believers out there.

37. Ultimate Journey
Author: Monroe, Robert
Book’s Topic: Astral Projection
Summary: Using geographical terms, Monroe ( Journeys out of the Body ) continues his task as guide to "innumerable people" who are fearful of out-of-body experiences (OBEs), a phenomenon which, for 30 years, he has been claiming to chart. At the Monroe Institute in Virginia, the author conducts classes on his frequent and voluntary OBEs which have, he maintains, provided him with news of his wife after her recent death from cancer. Monroe argues that, by processes often unintelligible to the uninitiated, he can go on science fiction-like trips to "anywhere, in any time, past, present or future," including earlier incarnations. Monroe foresees a unification of all those who practice OBE and a collective passage through the "Aperture" scheduled for the 35th century. His claims are not likely to convince unbelievers.

41.  Remote Viewing Secrets
Author: Joseph McMoneagle
Book’s Topic: Remote Viewing
Summary: "Remote viewing" is the ability to perceive psychically and describe unknown objects, people, places, or events. McMoneagle (Mind Trek, The Ultimate Time Machine), a former U.S. Army officer who worked for the Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), was recruited for the top-secret remote-viewing program known as STARGATE. Other books on this subject (e.g., Jim Schnabel's Remote Viewers, Dell, 1997; David Morehouse's Psychic Warrior, St. Martin's, 1996) are more biographical; McMoneagle instead offers basic definitions, examples, and qualifications that would be needed by the potential remote viewer. The second half of the book includes detailed training methods, technical applications, and protocols omitted in his previous titles. Because there is a lot of new information here, this is recommended for larger public and academic libraries.

This is the memoir of a believer who understands—and speaks to—the skeptics’ perspective. Maureen Caudill has degrees in physics and math from the University of Connecticut and Cornell University and spent more than twenty years as a computer scientist specializing in artificial intelligence and neural networks.

It is really stupid for you to have any fiction on there unless you wish to be associated with fiction. Psionics is already viewed as "scifi" anyways.

I would recommend that no one read any books on any type of magick other than chaos magick until they are sufficient at choosing to believe what they wish... Unless you wish to severly limit yourself. Many books/articles state things that are untrue, or even true but limiting (Even from psipog). Anything that is in a book or article out there, that is true, you will learn yourself through practice. By reading books and articles, you could "learn" things that are not true. You loose nothing by not reading books and articles. Chaos magick is ok as it revolves around choosing to believe what you wish, entirely negating the limiting factors of reading other articles.

For these reasons, until very recently, I would read no articles or books on magick or psionics. At this point, I still tend to shy away from reading them, but I do so every once and awhile. I am relatively capable of choosing what to believe, so reading such things tend not to influence me unless I let them. I would suggest you do the same and entirely ignore this list.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/430095/Liber-Null?autodown=pdf  Here's a link to a free pdf on a decent intro to chaos magick. I realize these forums are not for "magick" but it is in the best interest for anyone who wants to read material on any type of magick, psionics included, to first go through the key parts of that book.

Before you dismiss fictional sci-fi, you may want to visit this site.

http://www.kheper.net/topics/scifi/grading.html

Stolide....I fail to see your reasoning in recommending that everyone read only chaos books and material.....could you explain your reasoning?

I think it may be reasonable to introduce some chaos information as well..as some of it is helpful.

The SP book list is a work in progress and is not static at the present time, but I think it is very fair to allow people to read different methodologies and applications as well.  That way, they can make their own decisions in an informed manner.

The point with the fiction is part of the purpose of this site was to be less associated with fluff. Sticking fiction books in this list goes directly against the purpose of the site as most people (rightly or wrongly) will exclaim "Fluff!"

I thought I did but basically, here's why. Let's say nooblet the third starts psionics. He read's wingmakers and learns a bunch of false information. He assumes it's true. It greatly negatively impacts his ability to practice magick. He reads some more accurate books but has trouble adapting to them because of what he "learned" early on.

Nooblet the fourth reads up a bit on chaos magick. He learns that in regards to magick, "Nothig is true, Everything is permitted." And that he should be able to choose to believe whatever he wants. He then goes on to read wingmakers. He assumes it's true, it's not but because of his skill in chaos magick it works just fine for him. He then reads a more accurate book, he adapts quickly since he's been rolling a six sided die to determine his general world out look for the week anyways. This works even better for him.

Nooblet the fifth recognizes that the information in any book could be wrong and reads nothing. He learns everything on his own without the aid of books. He learns only things that are true (unless he is insane). He knows very little of the theory or terminology at first, but instead only knows what he learns from practice alone. He shuns himself even from psipog. After about 2 years, he hears about chaos magick and learns of it's purpose. He decides that this book is safe to read due to it's general tone of encouraging changing one's beliefs. He reads it. With this new understanding he is able to read other books and articles without being limited by their knowledge.

Anything that is in articles that is true, nooblet the fifth learns through practice. Nooblet the fourth first learns how to decide what to believe and eventually learns things that are true through practice. Nooblet the third may learn of things that are true, but will have a great deal of difficulty using them. Nooblet the third is like most of the OEC. Nooblet the fourth is what I wish I had done. Nooblet the fifth is me.

Somehow I don't think it would behoove our image to associate more strongly with the kind of practitioner who would draw a pentagram on the floor in ketchup and summon Hello Kitty... than with a practitioner of direct magick. Wink

Most of them wouldn't do that. Tongue I've known a few that talk about things like that, but very few would actually do that. Tongue You would be better off summoning other things than Hello Kitty.

I'm not saying to associate ourselves with chaos magick, or even to practice it, but to recognize the flaw in all other articles and books in magick. A small article for the site explaining mental control and the concept of the Random Belief would do wonders for anyone wishing to suck less.

Absolutely....and that's why there are different  types to choose from...

I also think I misread you earlier and I apologize for that...and thank you for your explanation Wink.

I think what we all worry about...is the noobie...who knows nothing but fantasy, sci-fi and RPG.  He would naturally choose the fictional books first.  But even wading thru Dune requires some dedication...  the first book was my favorite...the rest of the series..I could have done without.  Interesting yes, but the politics, while part of the storyline, tended to get a bit tedious.  I have the book series.

There are many authors who write good books.  And, you gotta admit....new age is here to stay.  The  Liber Null is a balancer, but a noobie would need to work up to that...to really be able to understand it.

An article explaining mental control and the concept of the Random Belief" is an excellent idea.  I bet you could write a really good one or it could be a collaberation with someone.

ok...so can we please get back to the actually books?  How should I present them?  Organize them?  I was going to have a pic of the front of the book beside each one...

come on, I need feedback.

On the other hand, you can't judge a book by its cover. If only we could have the "Look inside!" feature like on Amazon, or the limited-to-full-preview like on google books, but that would be hard.  Sad

Slightly more realistic is article-length book reviews by SP members with the star-rating (maybe for divided for style and practicality, maybe even plot) and all, but like you said, JK, most of us haven't read a tenth of these so that format would take forever to get a real booklist out.

I personally don't mind including the fiction books like Dune, as long as it's clearly marked "good interesting fiction for a psion's entertainment," but I can see how it would kind of open the door to very vaguely related to psionic practice books-- the more theory-of-knowledge chaos magick books, would quantum physics books be counted because some psions mention the mechanics so often in connection to psionics? Psychology's all well and good, but what about neurology?

Sure, but you all are going to have to recommend them, as I really don't know which are good books in those fields.

I got a copy of The Power of NowCheesy
It didn't put me off that the subtitle was "A guide to spiritual enlightenment" since, being a fan of Penczak, I've learned to accept if someone writes about this stuff while standing from a moralistic viewpoint that I might not share, if their actual methods are solid. I did wonder why Orbpael recommended it, if it wasn't primarily psionic, but the first couple of chapters did look very promising:

Quote
Chapter One: You Are Not Your Mind
The Greatest Obstacle to Enlightenment
Freeing Yourself from Your Mind
Enlightenment: Rising above Thought
Emotion: The Body's Reaction to your Mind

Very useful for a psion to read up on the philosophy of how one's own mind works, I thought. Later chapters go one about the nature of time, the nature of time and space, slowing down the aging process, strengthening the immune system, and how to find portals into the source of chi. That sounded to me pretty paranormal-heavy for what's supposed to be primarily a sort of guide to life, so I was beginning to see why it was kept on the list...

Now I can't. I vote NO for this on the SP booklist, and maybe that's unfair seeing as I haven't finished it, but here are my reasons:

For someone who seems to claim to speak from some sort of Socratic irony, I found Tolle pretty declamatory. The preface that turned me off follows...
Quote
In many people, as well as in most of the political and economic structures and the greater part of the media, the old consciousness is still deeply entrenched. Anyone who is still totally identified with the voice in their head-- the stream of involuntary and incessant thinking -- will inevitably fail to see what The Power of Now is all about [...] Furthermore, any teaching that puts the spotlight on the workings of the ego will necessarily provoke egoic reaction, resistance, and attack.

To my understanding, to seek and take under due consideration arguments of those who disagree with one, are not only a necessity of critical thinking but of enlightened attitude. I didn't have a problem reading this at all, until he responded to the critics as gracelessly as that.

Quote
I am that stranger who has nothing to give you and who is telling you to look inside. Not inside any box, as in the parable, but somewhere even closer: inside yourself.

"But I am not a beggar," I can hear you say.
Yup, the paragraph before this in the book, was a parable that Tolle wrote, casting himself as the savior. He does that reader-ventriloquism a lot.

If anyone can get past this self-aggrandization in the guise of a humble disclaimer, and cackling puppetmaster style of writing, The Power of Now does have a good long description of how to properly meditate (though Tolle doesn't refer to it as that.) There's void meditation mixed with moving meditation -- as in, meditation as a state of everyday being, not a quarter of an hour blocked off in the afternoon to trance and discipline the mind. His view on the mind is very much a social as well as personal commentary, and he suggested a kind of telepathic and empathic web existed in a subtler reality of the world:
Quote
I have observed that people who carry a lot of anger inside without being aware of it or expressing it are more likely to be attacked verbally and physically by other people. They have a strong emanation of anger that certain people pick up subliminally and that triggers their own latent anger.
Fascinating concept, but I thought he jumped from observation to interpretation a little far... where did he observe these angry people, and why would he conclude subliminal emanations? These are the same questions I would be asking if the above quote were a forum post, and I would be wondering the same if I were reading it off an online article or blog entry, but from a published book I expect more research put in for a stronger supported point.

But that awful writing style, it just goes on and on! I consider myself used to reading by way of sifting through, say, psionic content in a book heavily padded with tradition or philosophy. But this isn't padded with that so much as just a narcissistic voice. If anyone who's finished it can argue for the usefulness of the content, great, but I personally couldn't get past the second chapter.

I suggest you add Many Lives Many Masters, by Brian Weiss. It is the true story of him, a well-known psychiatrist, and how he hypnotizes his patient. The hypnotism taps into the far regions of the subconcious, and she begins to remember past lives. It is about $10 from Amazon.com.
