There are many different ways of doing this but the most famous thing is focal meditation with a candle. If you can light the candle that's even better.

I always wonder how people use meditation to solve problems and find various things about themselves out. Do you just focus on things like that instead of a candle, or is there a different method?
I design a ritual based on bringing up the problem as a key portion of my mind. A lot of my attention goes towards the problem and manifests it within my consciousness. As a part of the ritual, the mind enters a trance like state. I then, immediately from that trance state meditate on the problem. Usually, the problems metamorphosizes into a nonproblem, or the solution becomes a seed in my mind. That seed will need aid in germinating, and this may consist of further rituals, and of course physical action in daily life.
Think of it as psychedelic therapy, save that one induces the altered states of consciousness through meditation and ritual, rather than various drugs.
