Well, I said I would post a couple sketches. Do ignore the fact that the skull is on graph paper. It was what was on hand at the time. I did the skull today, and the baroque portrait on the seventh.

I was not paying attention to time, but I think it took around half an hour.

Impressive 0.o

I read somewhere that the artist draws reflections of themselves.  Perhaps this is not the case here.

I dunno.  Knowing stolide for as long as I've known him, it well may.  In a strange way, but still.  Very nice, stolide.  I can't draw to save my life.

I am glad you like it.

I think that this is only true if an artist is not doing a study (which these are). If I pull out a bowl of fruit and draw it, I would hardly say that it is a reflection of my self. If an artist sees a scene in his mind, then it is, at least, a product of his psyche.

Scenes that pop up into my mind frequently have skulls and things of generally baroque stylings. As such, I have chosen to do studies of these things, such that I will better be able to execute pieces when they are a reflection of myself.

Lol. Thanks.

As to not being able to draw, I am certain that you could do so well, if you put enough effort and time into it.

I don't know about Adfeng, but I'm sad to say the drawing part does not apply to me Sad. I can't even draw stick figures properly, or basic shapes.

Start with these. I would gladly give you pointers on anything that you are having trouble with. All it takes is, practice, dedication, and a bit of research. Pay very close attention to what you draw. A circle on edge looks like an ellipse. The job of the artist and the illusionist are one.

If that is a bit much, start with a square. Then draw a cube. Do a few pages filled with cubes and balls that you have shaded. Draw from a photograph or a physical object. Actively avoid drawing from the memory when trying to learn something new. If you post a couple images, I can do my best to help out.

Also, I did a mediocre paint over of the skull.

I'm jealous. You sir, have now gone beyond my limits of drawing in the next ten years. I'll take a look at the pdfs when I have some spare time though.

Since I have been drawing consistently since I was a child, and it would seem you have not, that would make sense. Tongue

Believe me though, I have seen people, myself included, make huge bounds if they truely apply themselves.

Yeah, that is the right one, I meant to link there, but grabbed the search instead.

I have never really focussed on painting as it is less convenient. I can pull out a pencil and paper anywhere. I am not able to do the same with a computer and tablet (what I use for reasons of space and messiness), or a canvas and a bunch of paints.

That painting specifically, I spent an hour or two on. I am working on a more detailed one presently that is a portrait of Poe. I am not very pleased with it however. It is far easier for me to do paintings of things that are not people. I suppose I will post it in this thread once I complete it.

Edit: The work in progress:

I plan on refining things a bit tomorrow.

He certainly captured the depressed look on that guy's face very well  Shocked

Hey, how about this.  Instead of me having to praise your work every time you post, let me just say you're an amazing artist and leave it at that.

Thanks but honestly, I am not an amazing artist. http://conceptart.org/ Peruse and you will find that 95% of the people there are better than I am. I practice more than the average person, and less than one who desires to be a professional. Therefore, I find it reasonable to say that I am mediocre. This will likely not be true as the years go by and I hit my 30's or so, but by then it will be a bit late. Tongue

And this is where the envy train begins...

Good... Good... Muahahaha!

Seriously though, if you post a couple of your drawings, I can probably give you decent advice.

The next work in progress. I expect it to be a few days yet before I am fully satisfied. I am also question what I should do with the background. My first inclination is to put in a chamber door with a bust of Pallas just above it. Tongue Then again, it may be better off with something simple, such as what is currently there...

Ah, I see you made the outline of his face more rounder. It's also more smooth and less sharp. I personally think the direction the face was looking towards in the first drawing is better than the direction Poe is looking towards in the second drawing. The tie looks very nice though.

I flip the painting all the time whilst working on it to notice mistakes. This is normal actually. In traditional art, people normally look at their work in a mirror. When you work on a picture long enough, your mind starts to fill in gaps with things that are not there. By flipping it, you get a fresh look at the painting, and notice mistakes.

At the end I can just have it facing whatever direction I want. Tongue
