Since I am breaking my habit of not posting here. I figure I might as well post up some of music and art I have done today. Here is a link to a song I wrote tonight. I suppose I will upload a sketch or two of mine later this evening. The song is called The Crow, and it is my latest attempt at utilizing a small piece of melody in the fashion that Bach does in his "Art of the Fugue." It is about the lonely black bird flying over the world, wishing he were not observing from without. http://www.mediafire.com/?4ludssaxdb6597i

Very nice! Can't say I'm an expert at music, but I like the way it's composed. Can't be any more specific than that, besides that I like the way the low and the high tones form a whole, while still being clearly defined and apart from each other.
Kudos to you!

I am glad you liked it. "The way the low and the high tones form a whole, while still being clearly defined and apart from each other." I was specifically going for that, so good.
Unfortunately, I am not wholy fond of it. It feels too reppetitive to me. I think my problem is that I need a better defined counter subject.
Edit: I thought I would add that I am no expert either. I am entirely self trained (I started 4 months ago or so) in playing the piano and composing. All it takes is a bit of effort and willingness to learn.

Very nice. It is a little repetitive, but it still makes for a good piece. It also makes me feel a bit lonely and depressed myself, but maybe that's what you're going for.

Might be a bit repetitive if it woould be a long piece, but IMHO a piece isn't repetitive until it gets boring. I think that for this piece, it merely adds to the music. Just my two cents though. I have to say that for someone self-taught, on piano, starting 4 months ago, this is very impressive. I'm a self-taught musician myself, on guitar (seems a whole lot easier to me than piano, really), started a year and a bit ago, but there's no way I could compose something like this. Or anything that can transfer a feeling, really.

All it takes is to focus and practice. Work with, and analyze, music that his the kind of feeling you want. I have been playing mostly Chopin (Marche Funebra, and I am just beginning the first movement of that sonata) and Bach (Tocatta and Fugue in d minor). When one understands why a composer picked certain kinds of phrases, and why they sound the way they do, it is simple to do something similar. Obviously I am not as good as either of those people were, but I can write music that is inspired by them.

I cannot imagine why I would so long as you credit it appropriately.
